Star of Warner Bros.' 1930s musicals, he overcame a career slump as popular leading man in 1940s noirs (most notably as 'Philip Marlowe' in MURDER MY SWEET). In the 1950s he became a successful television producer and director. Married to Joan Blondell (1936 - 1944) and June Allyson (1945 - his death).
