Featuring Shemp Howard (Solo)
103 min. (Feature Film)
A supposedly restful weekend at Col. MacFay's Long Island estate turns into much more, when Nick and Nora Charles (William Powell and Myrna Loy) arrive to find the property surrounded by trigger-happy security guards. An ex-business associate of MacFay's, Phil Church (Sheldon Leonard), has made threats on the Colonel's life and taken up residence at the estate next door. Church spent several years in prison for his part in one of MacFay's business deals, and wants money for his trouble. When MacFay is murdered, suspicion falls on Church when he apparently leaves for Cuba. But MacFay's family and associates may be mixed up in it as well, and it's up to Nick to help the police sort through the long list of suspects and motives.
Shemp Howard, in his only MGM film, has a small role in the final reel of the film as Wacky, one of a group of ex-cons sent up the river by Nick. The guys decide to host a birthday party for 1-year-old Nicky Jr., and find the festivities intruded on by the murder mystery's resolution. Shemp enjoys a brief, funny bit of dialogue when he turns up at the party with an infant in his arms... Creeps Binder: "I didn't know you were married." Wacky: "I ain't. You just told me to bring a kid."
