Terry Martin (James Stewart), ex-race car driver, works for Emory Motors as a test driver. He falls for new company publicity agent Jane Mitchell, and competes with plant engineer Frank for her attentions. When his partner 'Gadget' (Ted Healy) is almost killed in a serious accident, Terry loses faith in himself and his new carburetor design. Gadget inspires Terry to keep trying, and they decide to test the invention at the corporate time trials. A fuel line breaks and ignites causing deadly fumes and smoke to fill the cockpit, and Terry is rushed to the hospital clinging to life.
