Ted Healy was Moe Howard's childhood friend, who helped get Moe into the movies and acting, and became the leader of "Ted Healy & His Stooges." Ted was a heavy drinker and womanizer, which eventually contributed to the Stooges leaving him to go on their own.

Ted died two days after celebrating the birth of his only child, a son, Ted Jr.
